Target: Donald Trump, President of the United States

Goal: Denounce GOP’s reported attempts to set up unofficial ballot boxes.

The Republican Party was recently ordered by California’s chief elections official to remove unofficial ballot drop-off boxes from various public locations. California’s Attorney General has also warned that anyone who engages with vote tampering will face prosecution. These warnings come in the wake of the GOP seemingly attempting to collect votes in unofficial boxes and advertise the boxes’ locations on social media.

Republican officials claim that the unofficial ballot drop-off boxes were set up as a means to utilize California’s ballot collection law that allows anyone to collect ballots from voters and deliver them to county election offices. As a result, Republican officials reportedly refused to remove the boxes from the various public locations in Southern California. In response, California’s Secretary of State, Alex Padilla, said that his chief legal counsel sent a letter to Republican officials ordering them to remove the boxes and provide the state with the names, addresses and birthdays of voters who had already utilized the boxes as ballot drop off sites.

The unofficial ballot boxes were first recognized when a photo was posted to Twitter showing a man holding a ballot in front of a box with the label “Official ballot drop-off box” and the caption, “Doing my part and voting early… DM me for convenient locations to drop your ballot off at!” Padilla responded unequivocally, saying: “Operating unofficial ballot drop boxes–especially those misrepresented as official drop boxes–is not just misleading to voters, it’s a violation of state law.”

Sign this petition to urge Donald Trump to denounce these reported attempts to set up unofficial ballot drop off boxes in California and anywhere else in the United States.

Dear President Trump,

Your 2020 Presidential campaign has already stoked a lot of fears about the viability of this year’s presidential election. You have publicly spoken out against mail-in ballots, despite having used them in the past yourself. You have stated that votes will be miscounted or counted twice and have generally worked very hard to suggest that voting in the United States is unregulated.

In California, it is the Republican party that seemingly attempted to set up and advertise unofficial ballot drop off boxes. These boxes were allegedly marketed as official, regulated areas to drop off a ballot. They have since been removed and denounced by state officials. I urge you to denounce these unofficial drop off boxes in California and anywhere else in the United States.
