Take Immediate Action to Prevent Disastrous Oil Spill

Target: Nicolás Maduro, President of Venezuela

Goal: Take immediate action to remove sinking oil tanker from the ocean.

An oil tanker carrying 1.3 million gallons of oil is at severe risk of sinking, which could lead to an oil spill five times worse than that of the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska in 1989. The ship, which is moored in between Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago, is currently tilted and leaking water on board.

The tanker, called the Nabarima, began sinking around three months ago and officials are being criticized for not having taken immediate action. Fishermen in Trinidad and Tobago have called for a state of environmental emergency, highlighting the severe threat this potential oil spill poses to their livelihood, the diverse marine life and the larger Southern Caribbean region.

Given that this vessel is operated by the Venezuelan oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela, the president of this country should handle this situation with the urgency it needs. Sign below to demand President Nicolás Maduro take immediate action to ensure that this tanker does not sink.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Maduro,

The ecological risk that is at stake if the Nabarima oil tanker sinks will be truly catastrophic to marine life, the Caribbean people and the region as a whole. The fact that this situation has been unfolding for three months without any urgent action being taken is unacceptable.

In order to prevent an ecological disaster, I demand that you ensure the Nabarima does not sink and spill into the ocean.

Sincerely,
