Protect Black Trans Women from Violence and Murder

Target: Tom Wolf, Governor of Pennsylvania

Goal: Protect the LGBTQ community from violent hate crimes.

More trans individuals have been violently attacked this year than any other year before, at least since the Human Rights Campaign started measuring such violence. In total, 33 trans and gender non-conforming individuals have been murdered. Black trans women are especially vulnerable.

In Philadelphia, two trans women of color have been killed since April. Several more have been killed in 2019 and 2018. The LGBTQ community is not granted equal protection under the law, at least when it comes to hate crimes. The state of Pennsylvania does not recognize the LGBTQ community as a protected class. As a result, it is difficult to prevent such crimes from occurring or punish those responsible.

This may thankfully change with new legislation in the state. A new hate crimes bill would add the LGBTQ community as a protected group and would ensure those responsible for violence are charged for their crimes. Sign the petition to show your support for this legislation.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Wolf,

This has been the deadliest year ever for trans people, with 33 trans individuals and gender non-conforming people murdered nationwide in 2020 alone. Pennsylvania is not immune to this pandemic of hatred and violence. Two trans women of color have been murdered in the city of Philadelphia since April.

One reason this violence is allowed to persist is due to gaps in the state’s hate crimes legislation. New legislation being proposed would ensure the LGBTQ community is listed as a protected class so that those who perpetrate violence face the strictest penalties under the law.

I ask that you support the safety of Pennsylvania’s LGBTQ community.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
