Demand Control and Closure of Water-Poisoning Coal Ash Ponds

Target: Andrew Wheeler, Administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency

Goal: Demand restoration of rules for dangerous, unstable coal ash ponds.

The Trump administration has announced that coal ash ponds which may poison local water sources will no longer be subject to regulations in the latest assault on the environment. The ash is a byproduct of coal-fired power plants which contains multiple toxic substances, including lead and arsenic, and is linked to numerous health conditions including lung cancer, kidney disease, male impotency, and many others. Power companies disposed of this substance for decades by simply dumping it in artificial ponds, until research showed that both lined and unlined ponds contribute to extensive damage to nearby environments and health.

The repeal of rules dictating power companies close these sites is the most recent effort by President Trump and Andrew Wheeler, a former coal industry lobbyist, to revitalize the coal industry, despite a global shift away from this dangerous and inefficient source of energy. Now, leaking and unlined ponds will be allowed to stay open for years to come, and many will not be required to be drained and cleaned at all. Sign the petition below to demand that rules protecting innocent lives from death and disease be restored immediately.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Administrator Wheeler,

The decision to require coal-reliant energy producers to take responsibility for the harmful effects of their actions was a significant victory for the environment and living beings at risk of grave illness and injury. With the application of a simple rule, a vast variety of cancers, internal organ ailments, and other conditions could have been dramatically cut in populations across the United States.

Your decision to repeal this rule has no clear motivation apart from greed. In an effort to protect energy producers’ profits, you have sacrificed the health, safety, and lives of countless individuals and wildlife. I demand that you restore the 2015 decision to force the closure of dangerous coal ash ponds.

Sincerely,
