Save Butterflies From Disappearing Forever

Target: George Eustice, Secretary of State of the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

Goal: Conserve butterflies whose species populations have diminished as much as three-quarters.

The Big Butterfly Count, an annual butterfly survey, tallied record numbers of volunteer participants this year…and the lowest number of butterflies spotted per observer since the event began. Only 11 butterflies on average were spotted by each volunteer. This report could be the latest signal that the United Kingdom (UK) is facing a biodiversity crisis, especially with flying insects.

Britain currently has about 59 species of butterflies native to the region. Yet about 75 percent of these populations have seen their numbers reduced significantly in recent years. Butterflies that rely on a specific environment for survival, known as habitat specialists, face a particularly rough road. The numbers of these butterflies have dropped by over half.

Targeted conservation of at-risk species has shown promising results in boosting these numbers. Sign the petition below to urge more investment in these important conservation efforts.

Dear Mr. Eustice,

The UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme, the largest butterfly records collection in the world, demonstrates the United Kingdom’s commitment to preserving its most beautiful flying insect populations. The recently completed Big Butterfly Count shows the public’s in-kind enthusiasm. This latter initiative indicated a troubling result, however.

The numbers of observed butterflies were at their lowest levels in a decade. Currently, scientists can only theorize about the reason for this drop. The outcome does reflect a larger trend of dwindling butterfly populations in Britain, particularly habitat specialist species. Targeted conservation can and has combated this effect.

Please take a positive step toward resolving this crucial part of the greater biodiversity crisis through stronger investment in conservation programs for butterflies.

  1. Those out there raising their children by the fear of God. Must have these children understand the importance of every living organism in God’s perfect creation of life. This will ensure the hope that in years to come there will be leaders in the world who will make sure that Earth’s living organisms continue to exist. Saving not only the butterflies but saving every other living organism in the world today, is a sure way to save the fragile existence of humanity itself.
