Target: Governor Deval Patrick
Goal: Support bill that would make neglecting a suffering animal illegal
The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) is rallying to create a bill that would make neglecting to take a suffering animal to a veterinarian an offense under the state’s animal cruelty law. This bill will benefit animals who are in clear need of medical care but are in the custody of neglectful owners.
An animal that is suffering in pain is obvious to most people. Animals can’t verbalize what is specifically wrong with them, but there are clear signs that can indicate to us that they’re in pain. It is unfathomable that an owner could ignore the obvious signs of pain such as wimping, crying, limping, or bleeding. By the time most animals finally receive medical care, it is often too late.
It is the responsibility of the owner or caretaker to ensure that a pet is healthy and taken care of, just like any member of the family. Ignoring a problem is animal abuse, and many illnesses or injuries can quickly be taken care of. There is an unnecessary amount of sick animals in our country, and it is due in part to a large number of neglectful owners.
The passage of this bill and the threat of criminal actions will hopefully create more conscious owners. If someone is willing to take ownership of an animal as a pet, he or she needs to be willing to keep it healthy. Sign the petition below to support the MSPCA in its actions to pass this bill.
Dear Governor Deval Patrick,
There are too many pet owners that neglect their animals when they are in dire need of help. Unfortunately our pets can’t speak for themselves, so we as owners need to take care of them. It is usually obvious when an animal needs medical attention, but there are many people who choose to remain ignorant to the situation.
Animal cruelty investigators can’t be everywhere they are needed. By passing a bill to make sure neglecting an animal’s medical problems doesn’t happen, there would be a punishment for neglect. People may think twice before adopting an animal, or they may be more aware of the responsibility they are taking on.
Pets are an important part of a family and deserve the same care that any other family member does, especially since they are dependent on their owners. Please pass the bill the MSPCA is backing to ensure the neglect of a suffering animal is illegal.
