Combat Deforestation By Forbidding Sale of All Crops Grown on Destroyed Land

Target: Boris Johnson, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

Goal: Explicitly forbid the sale of products obtained by damaging or destroying forests.

The British government has announced plans to discourage the sale of products like cocoa, palm oil, and soy produced in deforested areas through a series of voluntary initiatives, despite concerns that this will allow companies to exploit British food laws. The proposed laws would forbid the sale of illegally harvested crops, but it does not address crops grown on land cleared after its proposed date of enactment.

Supermarkets, food producers, and environmentalists have all asked that the government establish clear rules which define precisely what is allowed, and to clarify murky language which could allow the continued sale of produce grown on deforested land. Sign the petition below to add your voice to these calls and demand that all deforestation be fought, whether illegal or not.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prime Minister Johnson,

Over 27,000 square miles of forest are destroyed annually, with the majority repurposed for industrial production of palm oil, soy, coffee, and other crops, spurring climate change and depriving countless animals of vital habitats. To combat this, the world’s governments must establish clear rules which offer direction to companies and seal any loopholes which might be exploited by industrial farms.

Your proposed legislation, while a welcome step in the right direction, falls far short of this mark. I demand that you set out clear guidelines for food distributors and producers which forbid the consumption of all products of deforestation, not merely those which are already illegal.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
