Stop Polluting England’s Water With Sewage

Target: Ian McAulay, CEO, Southern Water

Goal: End the pollution of England’s water and protect the drinking water of the nation’s citizens.

Pollution in England’s freshwater and saltwater bodies has reached its worst levels since 2014. The leaders of this pollution are the nation’s privatized water and sewage companies. Sign the petition to demand that the worst offenders step up and remediate their pollution to ensure safe water for all citizens.

There were over 2,204 pollution events by these companies in 2019. One of the leading offenders, Southern Water, is responsible for over 450 of those events. Raw sewage poses the most dangerous threat, as it can cause bacteria in drinking water. This sewage found its way into rivers and onto popular beaches.

Organizations have paid over £43 million in fines for their pollution, but this is not enough. The organizations must not only pay for these damages but take steps to remediate the pollution they’ve caused and invest in improvements to water and treatment facilities. Demand action.

Dear Mr. McAulay,

Your company accounted for over 450 of the astounding 2,204 pollution events in England in 2020 by private water and sewage companies. The leakage of raw sewage into freshwater bodies and onto English beaches poses a serious risk for the nation’s citizens.

Your organization was one of the worst offenders when it came to pollution in 2019. You must pay for your indiscretions, not only financially. I ask that you invest in constructing more advanced water and treatment facilities to help prevent future pollution and protect the drinking water of England’s citizens.
