Stop Texas Governor From Suppressing the Vote

Target: Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas

Goal: Maximize ballot drop-off sites to encourage greater voter participation.

Frantic attempts at voter suppression by state and national leaders just keep on coming in the run-up to the 2020 election. Texas has become the latest ground-zero for a concerted effort to disenfranchise millions of voters. The same day the President of the United States tested positive for a disease killing hundreds of thousands of people in this country, Texas governor Greg Abbott signed an order making it more difficult for voters concerned about their own health to cast a ballot.

The order will remove countless drop-off sites utilized for mail-in ballots. Each county will eventually be left with just one site. This questionable dictate will take place despite the fact that Texas has the nation’s second highest population and therefore a larger need for more voter options, not less. For context, the state’s most populated county, Harris County, currently has 12 drop-off locations that serve around five million people, a sizeable percentage of which are minorities. The Republican governor has been accused of targeting counties considered Democrat strongholds. With this order and other undercutting initiatives like halting Harris County mail-in voting applications, Governor Abbot has broken his vow to make voting easier and more accessible during the pandemic.

Sign the petition below to demand the governor stop this poorly veiled attempt at voter suppression.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Abbott,

“To force hundreds of thousands of seniors and voters with disabilities to use a single drop-off location in a county that stretches over nearly 2,000 square miles is prejudicial and dangerous,” stated Harris County Clerk Chris Hollins.

“There is no reason for this decision to limit us to one drop-off location other than voter suppression. If these leaders truly are doing right by you, why are they so afraid of you voting?” said Judge Lina Hidalgo, the top elected official in Harris County.

This clerk and this judge, respectively, shared these concerns following your executive order limiting county drop-off ballot sites. The last question is particularly relevant, Governor. You claim this order was to safeguard against “illegal voting.” How many times will this conspiracy theory of phantom hordes of fraudulent voters have to be debunked before you pay attention? What you are accomplishing with this order instead is disenfranchising millions of voters in your state. If this is your goal, then you are the true threat to election integrity.

You made pledges over the summer to help Texas’ voters stay safe in the midst of a global pandemic that has claimed over 15,000 in this state alone. Stop breaking your promises to the people. Halt this destructive order that demeans and debases American democracy.

Sincerely,
