End Construction of Coal Power Plant in Ecological Reserve

Target: Isidro A. Consunji, Chairman and CEO, DMCI Power Corporation

Goal: Demand end to proposed coal plant on Indigenous land.

Construction may soon begin on a coal-fired power plant in the Philippine province of Palawan, despite years of opposition from local Indigenous communities. Planning for the project was begun in 2012 by DMCI Power, a subsidiary of one of the largest Philippine corporations, without any consultation with or input from local groups. Opponents say that besides being destructive to the environment, the use of coal is unnecessary given the region’s abundant rivers, offering the opportunity for less harmful hydroelectric power.

DMCI has gained the permits it needs to begin construction, having ignored the concerns of environmentalists and local groups throughout the long process. Sign the petition below to demand that DMCI drop its plans to begin building this needless and dangerous plant.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Consunji,

The proposed coal-fired power plant in Palawan Province is wanted by no one other than your shareholders. Despite local leaders and communities and environmental advocates demanding a fair say in these plans, as well as strong criticism of the damage your plant may cause, you have chosen to ignore these voices for years.

However, it’s not too late to avoid causing irreversible damage to Palawan’s environment. I demand that you take the initiative and drop plans to build this plant where it is neither needed nor wanted.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

This project does not meet your Corporate Social
Responsibility statement – “protection and conservation of … ecological resources.” Furthermore, thermal coal is no longer economically viable, and you and your shareholders will probably be left with a stranded asset. Time to invest in renewables instead.

  2. Invest your money into solar or wind energy. Keep your dirty coal.

Isidro A. Consunji Hipocrita! Don’t take advantage of indigenous people. Try doing the same but in Iran.
