Walmart: Stop Reportedly Cutting Employees’ Hours and Pay During the Pandemic

Target: Doug McMillon, Chief Executive Officer of Walmart

Goal: Don’t cut workers hours while increasing their workload during the pandemic.

Walmart has cut some employees’ hours and pay while increasing workloads, according to workers who spoke with The Guardian. This comes despite Walmart announcing a 9.3 percent rise in sales and a 97 percent rise in e-commerce in August.

Walmart recently implemented a new “restructuring plan” promising “greater opportunity for associates to lead and take more ownership in the business.” The program consolidated departments and roles, apparently resulting in higher workloads and for some, the same or even less pay. According to Kimberly Patrick Gray, a Walmart associate in Tupelo, Mississippi, “The program just hurts the associates. It cut hours horrendously. It made it very difficult to pay bills.”

There have been countless complaints among employees since the restructuring plan was implemented. Sign below to demand Walmart create a better program that gives workers more hours and better pay, especially during the pandemic.

Dear Mr. McMillon,

Given that your sales have risen tremendously during the coronavirus crisis, there is no justification for apparently cutting hours and increasing workloads for little or no extra pay.

Walmart has seemingly earned a reputation for treating its employees badly. Especially during a global pandemic, you should be inclined to give your associates the best treatment possible, and therefore, I demand that you implement a better program that gives workers more stability in hours and wages.
