Don’t Deprive At-Risk Prisoners of Crucial Mental Health and Disability Support

Target: Fran Logan, Minister for Corrective Services, Western Australia

Goal: Demand adequate mental health and disability support services for prisoners at risk of depression and death.

Prisoners in the state of Western Australia face alarmingly high rates of death due to neglect, abuse, and self-harm, by far the highest in Australia. More than half of those who die in custody suffer from mental illness or emotional distress, yet the state’s Ministry for Corrective Services has failed to provide sufficient medication, counseling, or other mental health support for inmates. Because a disproportionate number of those in Western Australian prisons are Aboriginal Australians, the consequences of these deaths harm the communities most vulnerable to the loss of loved ones and supportive family members.

While many Australian prisons are run by private corporations, it remains the responsibility of state governments to screen those arrested for mental and psychological health conditions in order to ensure they receive effective support. Sign the petition below to demand that the government of Western Australia take responsibility for those at risk.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister Logan,

Despite extensive reporting by Aboriginal groups, the media, and your own government revealing the inadequacy of mental health services in prisons, little has been done to protect those at risk. Unsupported by prison authorities while under the jurisdiction of private prison corporations, hundreds of prisoners are in danger of suicide, self-harm, and worsening mental health. As Minister of Corrective Services, it is your duty to ensure that those in prison are provided with the support they need to cope with their disabilities and survive to return to their families. I demand that you earmark sufficient funds for the establishment of mental health counselors and treatments immediately.

Sincerely,
