Prevent Destruction of Vital Wildlife Habitat in Building of New Airport

Target: Arthur Tugade, Secretary of Transportation, the Philippines

Goal: Halt construction of airport in protected wetland until impact report is prepared.

Hundreds of acres of trees protected under Philippine law are alleged to have been illegally cut down, threatening the survival of countless animal and plant species. The mangrove forests of northern Manila Bay are home to species such as the endangered black-faced spoonbill as well as thousands of communities dependent upon fishing, salt production, and small-scale agriculture for food. New Manila International Airport, under construction by the largest corporation in the country, has already required the destruction of fishing areas and salt ponds. Because the finished airport will take over nearby forested areas, opponents point out that nearby mangrove trees are next.

The destruction of these trees will result in the loss of habitats and food for those most in need. Sign below and demand that the planners of the new airport offer a clear proposal for the preservation of protected forests.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Tugade,

New Manila International Airport may result in a valuable economic stimulus to the Philippines. However, plans which involve the destruction of essential mangrove forests would be an economic crime, condemning animals and humans alike to deprivation from food and homes. I demand that you order a halt to construction until a viable plan to protect mangrove forests is created.

Sincerely,

  1. DO people need the whole planet and not allow any other life form to co- exist in the world??

  2. It’s past due that we think of other life on this planet besides just human life. We all have the right to be here and need to respect each species’ rights. Sometimes we just need to change our plans for the good of all involved.
