Amazon: Do Not Put New Hires at Risk of Coronavirus

Target: Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon

Goal: Do not put thousands of new hires at risk of Coronavirus.

In the midst of Amazon workers reporting unsafe conditions at warehouses and fulfillment centers, the company has announced that they will be hiring 100,000 additional workers in the U.S. and Canada to meet the demands of surges in online shopping as a result of the global pandemic. Amazon is the world’s biggest online retailer and news of CEO Jeff Bezo’s rising wealth directly reflects the success of the company as online shopping.

Dave Clark, the senior vice president of worldwide operations at Amazon, stated that the company is committed to safety. “Collectively, our new team members have already completed more than 1,200,000 hours of safety training, with over 500,000 more hours expected, to ensure that in addition to fast and efficient delivery for our customers, we’re providing a safe and modern environment for our employees and partners,” he said. These hours of safety training for new hires don’t necessarily reflect the reality of working for Amazon during the global pandemic.

One worker at an Amazon fulfillment center in Staten Island who chose to remain anonymous said to news sources that she wakes up every morning dreading the number of colleagues that are infected with COVID-19. She said, “It’s frightening, but you have to put a smile on and you go to work because you need the income.” She reported that while Amazon introduced measures to protect workers’ health, like masks and hand sanitizing stations, not enough is being done to prevent the spread of the virus. She said that air filters in the facility are dirty and not frequently replaced, visibly ill colleagues vomit in the bathrooms, and workers are forced to stand close together while waiting for shift assignments despite the rules that workers must remain 6 feet apart. Ultimately, this worker alleged that “it affects your nerves, your mental state, your way of thinking—because you have to be cautious of everything you do now. It’s like I’m risking my life for a dollar. It’s twisted.”

Sign this petition to urge Jeff Bezos to implement further safety measures to protect Amazon employees from COVID-19.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Bezos,

Your wealth is based on extortion if the people who keep Amazon running are facing unsafe and unhealthy working conditions. Workers in fulfillment centers and warehouses have reported slight improvements with the addition of masks and hand sanitizing stations, but that they are still not kept as safe as possible from the Coronavirus as sick colleagues continue to work, social distancing is not properly practiced, and air filters are not changed frequently enough.

With the news that Amazon is bringing on even more employees to meet the demands of online shoppers during the pandemic, I urge you to implement further safety measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
