Don’t Force Prisoners Into Cramped COVID-19 Hot Zone Due to Wildfires

Target: Kate Brown, Governor of the state of Oregon

Goal: Allow mass release of prisoners in order to protect from further spread of the coronavirus.

Due to unprecedented wildfires, thousands of prisoners in Oregon state were recently evacuated and forced into cramped conditions that could likely increase the spread of the coronavirus. Incarcerated individuals were placed in Oregon State Penitentiary, an already overcrowded prison that has been a recent hot spot for Covid-19.

According to reports by activists and family members, evacuees are packed into makeshift sleeping quarters where breathing can be difficult, wait for food is long and many are forced to sleep on the floor. Authorities have admitted that the conditions could contribute to the spread of Covid-19.

Officials have already faced scrutiny for refusing to reduce prison populations during the pandemic. Due to worsened conditions caused by wildfire evacuations, activists have renewed their calls to approve mass releases in order to slow the spread of the virus. Sign below to demand governor Kate Brown approve release of certain prisoners in order to protect incarcerated individuals from the heightened risk of contracting Covid-19.

Dear Governor Brown,

Oregon state prisoners are being forced into cramped conditions where it is hard to breathe and the coronavirus will likely spread. Their health and well-being must be protected.

Releasing at-risk prisoners and those who have less than a year left in their sentence could clear up some much-needed space in the Oregon State Penitentiary, and could therefore save lives. In order to properly address the potential spread of the coronavirus, I demand that you allow the release of eligible prisoners.
