Save Children From Poverty, Despair, and Crushing Inequities

Target: Jeppe Tranholm-Mikkelsen, Secretary-General of the Council of the European Union

Goal: Support immigration, asylum, and investment reforms that strengthen children’s rights.

Politicians may love to stir up debates and attacks about immigration, but far too often the casualties in these political wars are innocent children. Europe is currently experiencing this harsh reality first-hand. In many parts of the continent, migrant kids—many of whom have lived in Europe their whole life—receive no access to meaningful healthcare, severely depleted educational opportunities, and are not even viewed as citizens in the country where they were born. As a result, these children by and large live life on the fringes and on the edge…more susceptible to chronic illness and mental anguish but lacking the resources that could help alleviate their pain.

Europe has two important opportunities to make a better life for such children. The proposed Asylum and Migration Pact would establish a European Union Settlement Framework with a humanitarian focus. This framework would seek solutions for asylum and migration issues in a more unified, empathetic way that addresses both needs of the community and rights of the migrants. The Child Rights Strategy is another comprehensive initiative that puts the development and protection of all children at its center. This plan, if fully invested and funded, could uplift 20 million people out of poverty. Children account for 25 percent of Europe’s impoverished, with migrant children disproportionately impacted.

Sign the petition below to champion two ambitious, vital plans of action that could change the lives of Europe’s youngest and most vulnerable for the better.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Tranholm-Mikkelsen,

The European Union is a strong supporter of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. For too many years, however, the EU has not honored its promise to these young people. With undocumented children in particular, the struggles have been immense…from soaring rates of suicidal impulses to deep inequities in healthcare, education, and citizenship status itself.

The Asylum and Migration Pact and the Child Rights Strategy could mitigate these tragedies and open a whole new world—one free of oppression and systemic abuse—for Europe’s children. Please fully invest in and support both of these life-changing efforts.

Sincerely,
