U.S.: Join the Global COVID-19 Vaccine Effort

Target: Donald Trump, President of the United States

Goal: Participate in the World Health Organization’s global COVID-19 vaccine effort to end the pandemic.

The Trump administration has withdrawn the United States from the international effort to make and distribute a COVID-19 vaccine. Trump is betting that the U.S. will “win” the vaccine race, but it won’t be a win unless the vaccine can be distributed equitably and efficiently across the world.

The World Health Organization and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, are heading the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access Facility, which is meant to develop the vaccine quickly and ensure there are enough vaccines for every country. There are 170 countries currently involved in the plan, and vaccine priority will go to those at highest risk for COVID-19.

The Trump administration has been opposed to the WHO since the beginning of the pandemic, which is largely why the U.S. is not participating in the global vaccine effort. Trump has repeatedly criticized the WHO in an attempt to divert blame for mishandling of the virus from his government.

This petty decision could have major consequences for the United States. By not participating, the U.S. will likely not have access to vaccine candidates produced in the program, possibly preventing Americans from being vaccinated with the rest of the world. On the flip side, the international community won’t have access to vaccines produced by the U.S. COVID-19 is highly contagious, so global vaccination is needed, especially for the economy to reopen with travel between different nations.

For the sake of global health, the U.S. needs to participate in the international vaccine development and distribution effort. Sign the petition below to demand that the U.S. cooperate to end the global pandemic.

Dear President Trump,

The World Health Organization’s plan for global cooperation in developing and distributing a COVID-19 vaccine is instrumental for ending the pandemic. The decision to withdraw the United States from this plan will be disastrous for the nation and the international community because it could slow the development of a vaccine, both at home and abroad. The development of a vaccine needs to be a cooperative international effort so that it can be distributed equitably, with priority for those that need it the most.

The COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access Facility must include the U.S. in order to effectively fight off this pandemic. I demand that the United States join the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 vaccine development and distribution effort to protect Americans and citizens of the world.
