Protect Wildlife and Public Health From Toxic Oil Fracking

Target: Karen Mouritsen, California Director of the Bureau of Land Management

Goal: Halt plans for oil and gas fracking in California to prevent worsened air pollution and wildfires.

The Trump administration is planning to open up a large area of land in California to oil drilling and fracking, which contribute to climate change and increase air pollution. California is already suffering from the effects of climate change, with raging wildfires caused by more frequent heatwaves and a virus that spreads more easily with air pollution.

With hydraulic fracking, large amounts of water are pumped at high pressure to break rock and reach oil deposits. This wastes water that could be used for irrigation or putting out fires. It also increases our dependency on fossil fuels, which contributes to climate change and air pollution. Fracking also destroys the land where native species used to thrive in complex ecosystems.

The four thousand acres of Kern County where the oil and gas lease sale is proposed contains the Lokern-Buena Vista Area of Critical Environmental Concern, and edges on the Carrizo Plain National Monument and Bitter Creek National Wildlife Refuge. There are also several endangered species in the county that could be hurt by the fracking, including the San Joaquin kit fox, condor, and jewelflower.

We cannot allow our environment and our health to be destroyed. Sign the petition to demand that the Bureau of Land Management halt plans to sell land in California for fracking.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. Mouritsen,

The plans to lease land in Kern County, California for oil drilling and fracking will have disastrous consequences. Fracking is an extremely destructive process that ruins wildlife, contaminates the environment, and contributes to climate change. California is already suffering from the effects of climate change, with raging wildfires caused by more frequent heatwaves and a virus that spreads more easily with air pollution. The county where the fracking would take place is also home to several endangered species that would be impacted by the fracking.

Fracking destroys the environment and public health. I demand that you stop plans to sell land in Kern County for oil and gas drilling.

Sincerely,
