Don’t Give Mining and Logging Companies Free Reign to Destroy Environment

Target: Joko Widodo, President of Indonesia

Goal: Don’t support controversial bill which threatens environment and political rights in violation of constitutional law.

A bill which would enact sweeping and destructive changes to Indonesian environmental regulations is being forced through that country’s legislature, despite limited public input, inadequate legal reviews, and the fact that omnibus laws are in violation of the Indonesian constitution. The bill would relax requirements for permits and environmental impact assessments, paving the way for foreign companies to act with impunity in mining, logging, and agricultural efforts.

Deliberation on the omnibus bill has continued despite a recess of the People’s Representative Council, the national legislature. This is a violation of law and protocol, and has allowed President Joko Widodo’s government to force the bill through normal procedures. The bill would also strip communities’ ability to challenge damage to their local areas by private companies, signaling a return to Indonesia’s formerly dictatorial style of governance.

Indonesians have fought long and hard to protect individual and local rights as well as their environment. This bill, in addition to the clear disrespect for Indonesian citizens and law, would benefit only foreign businesses while opening the country up to pollution and endangering communities and wildlife. Sign the petition below to let President Widodo know that the eyes of the world are upon him and that he must reject this destructive bill.

Dear President Widodo,

The omnibus bill on job creation includes numerous provisions which would severely weaken Indonesia’s communities and create a serious risk of extensive environmental damage. Despite demand from opposition figures and ordinary citizens, deliberation on the bill has continued in violation of the law. Indonesians deserve a say in how their country is protected and how they will safeguard wildlife and the environment. I demand that you withdraw support for this bill and veto it should it come before you.
