Pay for Medical Treatment of Sierra Leoneans Injured and Sickened by Diamond Mine

Target: Beny Steinmetz, CEO, BSG Resources Limited

Goal: Admit role in causing injury and illness to communities neighboring dangerous diamond mines.

Since 2003, residents of the city of Koidu, Sierra Leone have suffered from water poisoned by toxic waste, dangerous proximity to blasting, and broken promises from the owners of a controversial diamond mine. When the government in Freetown licensed the mine, owned by a subsidiary of Israeli magnate Beny Steinmetz, one of the conditions was that the company responsible move residents from within 500 meters of the mine to safe accommodation. This was done without the agreement of the residents themselves.

Now, Koidu residents have brought a lawsuit against BSG Resources demanding compensation for the destruction done to their homes and their health. While a judge has temporarily frozen BSG’s assets in Sierra Leone, the company has denied any responsibility. The citizens of Koidu deserve to have their claims taken seriously and compensation paid to address injuries, illness, and loss of livelihood and property. Sign the petition below to demand this irresponsible company admit to its wrongdoing and take responsibility for healing the communities it’s harmed.

Dear Mr. Steinmetz,

For nearly 20 years, your company has profited from Sierra Leone’s rich diamond deposits even as the mine in Koidu has poisoned water, damaged homes, and forced locals off of their property. Now, locals are standing up to you, but your employees refuse to acknowledge their role in the destruction caused.

I demand that you accept responsibility for the harmful effects of your mining venture and pay for the safe relocation and medical treatment of those hurt by it. The lives of these people are worth far more than any diamonds.
