Trump: Apologize for Racist Remarks Used to Demean Black Women

Target: Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America

Goal: Apologize for racist tropes used against Joe Biden’s running mate, Senator Kamala Harris.

President Trump and his allies are using racist tropes to demean Senator Kamala Harris, Joe Biden’s recent vice-presidential pick. Just days after Harris joined the ticket, the Trump campaign called her “a mad woman”, “extraordinarily nasty”, and “so angry.”

In addition, a Trump campaign fundraising email called Harris “the meanest” senator. The act of depicting a Black woman as “angry” plays on a racist trope that goes back generations and has a complex history in shaping gender identity, power and class in America.

Michael Eric Dyson, a professor and author from Georgetown University, explained how “the notion of the angry Black woman was a way- is a way- of trying to keep in place Black women who have stepped outside of their bounds, and who have refused to concede the legitimacy of being a docile being in the face of white power.” Sign below to demand the Trump campaign apologize for perpetuating racism against Black women by using racist tropes against Senator Kamala Harris.

Dear President Trump,

Your use of the slurs “angry”, “nasty” and “a mad woman” against Joe Biden’s running mate is perpetuating racism and signaling to your fan base that it is okay to demean women of color.

The words you have used against her represent generations of denying Black women their complexity of emotion, power and value in society. I demand that you apologize for using harmful racist tropes against Senator Kamala Harris.
