Don’t Ban Face Masks in Police Department During Deadly Pandemic

Target: Billy Woods, Sheriff of Marion County, Florida Police Department

Goal: Demand Sheriff Woods reverse his decision to ban face masks among deputies and visitors of the department during coronavirus pandemic.

A sheriff in Marion County, Florida recently banned deputies from wearing face masks while on duty. He forbade visitors to the police department from wearing coverings as well. This comes despite rising coronavirus cases in Marion County and across the state of Florida.

Sheriff Billy Woods defended his reckless ban, saying that due to recent sentiments towards the police surrounding Black Lives Matter protests, officers should not have their voices muffled or their faces covered. Woods, a Republican, has denied widespread scientific evidence that masks substantially decrease the risk of spreading the coronavirus. Marion County has seen an average of 176 new cases and four new deaths per day in the last week.

Banning face masks among deputies will only increase political divisiveness surrounding mask wearing and likely increase the spread of the coronavirus. Sign below to demand Sheriff Billy Woods reverse his reckless decision to ban crucial face coverings during a pandemic.

Dear Sheriff Woods,

Your decision to forbid deputies and visitors to the police department from wearing masks is dangerous and could contribute to coronavirus-related sickness and death in your community.

Florida is suffering some of the highest Covid-19 case rates in the country. I demand that you reverse your decision to ban face masks during a global pandemic.
