Grant America’s Frontline Workers Paid Sick Leave

Target: Eugene Scalia, Secretary of the Department of Labor

Goal: Require businesses to provide their full-time employees with sick leave.

Millions of grocery store workers, transportation workers, fast food workers, and even medical workers go without paid sick leave. This failure to invest in the health of America’s workforce not only harms sick workers, but can also cause other employees to get infected, spreading disease and resulting in outbreaks.

Paid leave in America is decided by companies, not by the government. This means that employees have to fight to get sick leave, maternity leave, and vacation time. We need laws that mandate workers’ rights, including access to paid leave. It shouldn’t be up to the generosity of a company to grant paid sick leave because this allows them to exploit the workers who are most vulnerable.

Low income workers are often the ones who don’t have paid sick leave, but they need it the most. Employees at farms, warehouses, and grocery stores have to work in person where it’s more likely for disease to spread. If they come into work sick, they could expose their fellow employees and customers to infection too.

The U.S. is one of the wealthiest nations in the world, it can afford to support its workers. Sign the petition below to demand that the Department of Labor require companies to provide five days of paid sick leave for full-time employees to protect public health.

Dear Secretary Scalia,

The United States is one of the wealthiest nations in the world, yet it does not require employers to grant their workers paid sick leave. During this pandemic, employees deserve sick leave. Forcing employees to come into work will cause their colleagues to get sick too. Allowing corporations to decide for themselves whether to grant sick leave means that those with higher paying jobs will get sick leave, but often not blue-collar workers at farms and grocery stores.

Low income groups are actually the most at risk for COVID-19 because they are the ones working in-person jobs. As a successful nation that claims to be a place of fairness and equality, American laws should recognize the value of workers and support them. I demand that you require there to be at least five days of sick leave for all full-time workers.

These people are RISKING THEIR LIVES to care for others. When they fall ill, we must ensure they are cared for.

I would gladly sign this petition, but some grocery workers are classified as part-time, so I’m not signing it.

They care for us – so we must care for them.
One for all and all for one!
