Do Not Censor Communication of Chinese Americans By Banning WeChat App

Target: Donald Trump, President of the United States

Goal: Do not block the private communication of Chinese Americans via WeChat.

WeChat is an online messaging app that many Chinese Americans use as the primary means of communication with their friends and family in China. President Trump recently ordered American firms to stop all business proceedings with the app. The decision has been met with opposition from Chinese communities. One user said, “WeChat has become the ‘it’ tool for Chinese-speaking people, no matter where you are around the world.”

The app has more than one billion users and is multifunctional. While it is primarily a messaging tool, it can also be used for shopping, gaming, and dating. It is as endemic to Chinese culture as Facebook is in the United States. WeChat’s success is also linked to the ban on American-made apps in China. Because Chinese nationals cannot access apps like WhatsApp and Instagram, both of which are owned and operated by Facebook, anyone who wants to stay in contact with someone in China defaults to WeChat.

Many Chinese Americans feel that the block of WeChat is an attack to their culture and are worried about their connection with friends and family in China as well as overarching China-US relations. Jennie, a 21-year-old student at the University of California said, “At first I didn’t believe that it is true. Then I just felt very angry.” Jennie said that she averages about four hours a day on WeChat. She uses the app to stay in contact with people in both the US and China as well as stay up to date by reading articles published on the public accounts of Chinese media, content creators, and businesses.

Sign this petition to urge President Trump to not block the use of WeChat.

Dear President Trump,

The private communication of US citizens should never be compromised. However, your decision to stop all business with WeChat means that countless Chinese Americans will be unable to stay in contact with their friends and family both domestically and internationally. The app is necessary because apps like WhatsApp and Instagram are inaccessible in China. However, WeChat is also a popular option for many Chinese Americans even within the United States.

The attack on WeChat feels very much like an attack on the Chinese community here in the United States. I urge you to not ban the use of this app.
