Don’t Postpone Bolivia’s General Elections While Interim President is in Power

Target: Salvador Romero, Head of Bolivian Electoral Court

Goal: Stop postponing general elections in Bolivia.

Bolivian political officials have moved to postpone the general elections for a second time, holding up the process of democracy. The election was supposed to take place in May. It was previously rescheduled for September 6 when the country went into lockdown as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The government has announced that the elections will be postponed again until October 18. The decision to delay the elections a second time was based on medical experts projecting a peak for COVID-19 infections in late August or early September.

Salvador Romero, the head of Bolivia’s electoral court, spoke on the decision to delay the elections, saying, “The definitive date for the election gives better conditions for health protection, outside voting facilities and the arrival of international observer missions.” However, the former Senate vice president Jeanine Anez, who is currently serving as the interim president, has been criticized for dragging on her tenure.

There are many ways for citizens to vote while remaining socially distanced, such as vote by mail or email. Sign this petition to urge Bolivia to stop postponing the general elections.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Romero,

You must stop your interference with the democratic process in Bolivia and allow the general elections to take place. Although the COVID-19 pandemic poses new risks and challenges to voting, there are absolutely ways to vote while remaining socially distanced. Bolivia could set up vote by mail or email or keep polling places open for longer amounts of time while limiting crowd sizes within the spaces.

The delay of the general elections—especially with an interim president—is irresponsible. I urge you to stop delaying the general elections in Bolivia.

Sincerely,
