Target: Joachim Gauck, President of Germany
Goal: Thank Germany for reinstating its global health fund, and pledging to, once again, donate 267 million dollars to alleviate disease worldwide
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria was created to organize international efforts to fight three of the world’s most devastating diseases. The fund dramatically increased awareness of the acute need for greater funding. In response, many countries worldwide pledged annual sums of money to help alleviate poverty, improve research, and deliver vaccines to countries in need. Thank Germany for reinstating their annual pledge.
Since the fund’s beginning, Germany has donated 200 million euros, or 267 million dollars, annually. However, due to concerns of corruption and fraud, Germany reduced their contribution by half in 2011 and threatened to cut the donation all together if conditions did not improve. As other funding dried up, The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria had to cancel a round of grants. Since then, the Global Health Fund is under new leadership and has been able to increase their grant availability while reducing their operating costs.
In light of the Global Fund’s improved leadership and performance, Germany has reinstated their full funding pledge and plans on continuing to give the full amount in years to come. Increased funding for the Global Fund means that more money will be available to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. That means more vaccines given to needy countries, and millions of lives saved.
Thank Germany for reinstating their pledge and donating 267 million dollars annually.
Dear President Gauck,
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria provides essential services to alleviate the damage done by three of the world’s most devastating diseases. The rates of Malaria, Tuberculosis, and AIDS could be significantly reduced by improving living conditions, education, and other simple prevention strategies. Yet, many of the world’s poorest nations do not have the resources to fight these deadly and heartbreaking diseases.
The Global Fund contributes not only recourses to fight disease but also fosters global awareness. Finding solutions to AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria is a global effort, and when people become aware of the devastation these diseases cause, they are more likely to support research and funding to eradicate them. Thank you for reinstating Germany’s yearly pledge and for protecting the lives of millions of people worldwide.
