Don’t Undo Natives’ Rights to Govern Their Own Land

Target: Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House

Goal: Stop any legislation that tramples the sovereignty of the Creek Nation.

The Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation in Oklahoma, upholding their right to govern their own land as per an earlier treaty. While this is great news for people of all Native tribes, as it means that the Supreme Court as it currently sits respects that treaties with Native tribes are law, there is a major risk that Congress could undo this progress.

Treaties are law because of the court ruling, but the laws can be changed by act of Congress. In order to preserve Native sovereignty over their own law, we need to put pressure on Congress to respect these treaties. Sign our petition and demand that Nancy Pelosi and the House of Representatives protects the rights of the Creek Nation and other native peoples of our country.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Speaker Pelosi,

The Supreme Court case that protected the Muscogee (Creek) land rights was a great victory for the indigenous peoples of this country. The only thing that could stop their rights from being maintained is Congress itself.

In order to preserve the sovereignty of the Creek Nation and other Native tribes, we demand that you ensure that you will not allow Congress to infringe on their rights. Native peoples of all kinds have suffered far too much at the hands of the American government, and that needs to stop. Make clear that you will side with the Creek Nation and other Native Americans.

Sincerely,

[ Your Name Here ]
