Stop Paying Disabled Employees as Little as $2 per Hour

Target: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell

Goal: Ensure workplace equality and fair pay for disabled Americans.

Thousands of disabled Americans across the country are being brutally taken advantage and are living in poverty as a result. A loophole in the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 allows companies to pay less than minimum wage to a person if they can prove that they are less productive than the average employee. This loophole has been used to pay hundreds of thousands of disabled employees an average of $2.15 an hour.

Companies like Goodwill have been accused of paying their disabled employees as little as three cents and then frame their actions as charitable by saying they are providing work for employees who couldn’t find it elsewhere. This practice is absolutely despicable. Laws such as this one strip away the rights of disabled people and highlight the extreme disrespect they receive in modern society.

Many disabled people live in extreme poverty because society has deemed them less than human and exploited them for their labor while doing little to ensure a decent quality of life. As a society, the United States must take a stand and work to ensure that every person is treated in a fair and equal way. Sign this petition today demanding that the loophole in the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 be repealed today.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator McConnell,

The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 has given companies around the country the ability to compensate their disabled workers unfairly. There is a loophole in this act that provides a business with the right to pay an employee less if they can prove that their productivity is less than their average employee. Companies have taken this loophole to the extreme with instances of disabled workers being paid a mere three cents an hour.

We, as a country, can no longer excuse this heinous exploitation of our more vulnerable citizens. Hundreds of thousands of disabled people live in abject poverty because the law of the United States views them as less than human. The loophole in the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 must be repealed immediately. Please use your seat to make a difference in the lives of disabled Americans.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

WHAAAAAAAT? Don’t be ridiculous. Minimum wage is $9.10. Stop making shit up. If the disabled people feel they are not paid enough, find another job. Wages are discussed at time of job offer. Obviously, they agreed to the terms of wages, and don’t bother handing me that bullshit about, they had no choice. EVERYONE has a choice, good or bad.

This is tantamount to slave labor. Close the loophole.
