Protect Thousands of Communities From Toxic Floods

Target: Andrew R. Wheeler, Administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency

Goal: Investigate and protect toxic waste dumps at risk of rising sea levels.

Hundreds of toxic waste sites along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States are at risk of washing into nearby communities as sea levels rise, according to an alarming new report. These sites, operated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Superfund program, contain tons of lethal waste produced by industrial facilities.

Managers at Superfund sites have been left unprepared by the Trump administration’s defunding of climate change studies at the EPA. Had funding not been stripped from the EPA’s climate change program, the agency would have had time to install flood protections. Instead, millions of people are now at risk of exposure to some of the most dangerous materials on US soil.

The EPA now has a shrinking amount of time to investigate and floodproof Superfund sites. Sign the petition below to demand that this work be started immediately to prevent widescale damage to health and property.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Wheeler,

The revelation that the EPA’s Superfund toxic waste storage sites are at risk of flooding is further proof of the Trump administration’s perilous attitude towards climate change research. Coastal communities in states from Texas to Maine are now at risk of toxic contamination in the likely event of flooding as sea levels rise due to climate change.

Your administration has failed to adequately prepare to protect the safety of millions of people. I demand that you immediately investigate sites for flooding risks and floodproof them in order of urgency. It’s too late to predict this grave threat, but there is still time to mitigate its effects.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
