Stop Funding Militarized Police Forces That Exacerbate Racism

Target: Michael Wirth, Chief Executive Officer of Chevron

Goal: Stop funding militarized police foundations that exacerbate racism.

Chevron, Shell, and a multitude of other corporations are directly funding the militarized police forces currently causing fear and heartache across our nation. A recent investigation found that the fossil fuel industry, which drives rampant environmental racism and climate injustice, is funding powerful police groups in major U.S. cities responsible for decades of violence against black and brown communities. The report makes evident that corporate polluters are a common enemy in the fight against racial and environmental justice.

According to an investigation by the Public Accountability Initiative, some of America’s largest oil and gas companies, private utilities, and financial institutions are backing police foundations that are using weapons of war against Black Lives Matter protesters. Police foundations are private entities that provide funds to local departments for training, weapons, equipment, and surveillance technology. Among those that fund police groups are Chevron, Shell, Wells Fargo, and more. Chevron, one of the world’s largest oil and gas companies, is among the world’s top 25 polluters known for contamination of low-income-communities of color with toxic, cancer-causing chemicals. Chevron sponsors several police departments, including in Houston, New Orleans and Salt Lake City.

It is grossly unethical that the same companies that drive systemic racism are funding militarized police forces that attack black and brown communities. Demand Chevron and other corporations stop funding powerful police foundations.

Dear Mr. Wirth,

It is no surprise that a company like Chevron, one that drives rampant environmental injustice and climate violence, also financially backs violent police forces that are using weapons of war against Black Lives Matter protesters.

You cannot continue to stand for this cruel and inhumane racism against our valuable black and brown communities. I demand that Chevron immediately stop funding violent police foundations.
