Don’t Suppress Immigrant Voices in the Drawing of Congressional Districts

Target: Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives

Goal: Stop Trump from excluding immigrants in the drawing of congressional districts.

In past censuses, immigrant communities have been underrepresented because many undocumented persons are afraid responding could lead to their deportation. This census is an opportunity for immigrants to receive fair representation, but President Trump is trying to exclude them from this important redistricting process. The census comes only every decade, and it plays a pivotal role in the public’s representation government.

Trump signed a memorandum that would exclude undocumented immigrants from being counted in drawing congressional district lines. This is yet another attempt to suppress minority voters who already have had their voices tamped out by voter suppression laws and gerrymandering. The House of Representatives will be the most affected by the census, because the population totals determine the number of representatives each district has. The census could shift the balance of power in the House and give greater voice to minority communities, unless Trump’s memorandum is passed.

Immigrants are an essential part of America’s past, present, and future. Their representation is vital and could play an important role in congressional power for the next decade. Sign the petition below to call for Congress to block Trump from excluding undocumented immigrants in the drawing of congressional district lines.

If you have not responded to the 2020 census, you can fill it out and find more information here.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Speaker Pelosi,

Immigrants are an important part of our nation’s community and history. President Trump is seeking to exclude undocumented immigrants from the drawing of congressional district lines with the 2020 census, which would severely limit immigrant voices in government. States are represented in the House based on population numbers from the census. Excluding immigrants from this count is an illegal method of voter suppression as immigrants will be excluded from representation.

The 2020 census should be an unbiased count that is used to fairly represent all Americans—whether they have been granted citizenship or not. Excluding immigrants is unfair and unconstitutional. I insist that you ensure immigrants are counted in the drawing of congressional district lines.

Sincerely,
