Protect Marginalized Communities from Pollution and Environmental Hazards

Target: Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives

Goal: Protect marginalized communities from deadly pollution and environmental hazards caused by power plants, construction, pipelines, and more.

America’s most marginalized communities are being silenced, their time to speak out against deadly highway, pipeline, and chemical plant construction restricted by the federal government. The Trump administration is discarding part of a well-established policy that protects the public from pollution and other environmental hazards. A new rules limit the time the public has to comment on projects and reduces environmental impact review.

The National Environmental Policy Act was signed into law by Nixon and has been a key piece of legislation to protect low-income communities from the hazards of large-scale infrastructure projects. Oil companies and developers have often been frustrated with these rules because they slow down the building process. However, extensive project review is important to ensure the health of the public and the environment. This act protects minority communities who are disproportionately affected by pipelines and chemical plants that are often built near their neighborhoods.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, environmental review for pollution is vital. Airborne pollutants increase the spread of the virus, infecting more people and worsening the pandemic. Cutting out environmental review will be disastrous for efforts to combat the virus. Meanwhile, reducing environmental review and limiting public input to large scale projects will give big companies free rein over our environment and health. Environmental impact review is needed to protect the health of marginalized communities and to preserve the environment for future generations. Sign the petition to call for Congress to block Trump’s destructive changes to environmental policy.

Dear Speaker Pelosi,

The National Environmental Policy Act protects marginalized communities from health and safety hazards and reduces harmful pollution from large-scale infrastructure projects. The Trump administration has rolled back many of these protections, cutting out environmental impact review and limiting public input, to allow big companies to speed up their projects and destroy the environment.

During the COVID-19 pandemic it is more important than ever that regulations on pollution remain in place to prevent the spread of the virus. Cutting environmental review and removing the voice of the public from project development will result in heightened climate change issues and worsening public health. I ask that you block the Trump administration from enacting these changes to protect public safety and the health of the environment.
