Extend Federal Eviction Moratorium Through January 1st, 2021

Target: Senator Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Leader

Goal: Protect vulnerable tenants through the remainder of the pandemic by extending the federal eviction moratorium through the end of the year.

Tens of millions of Americans are mere days away from homelessness. Since the CARES Act was signed back in March, there has been a federal ban on evictions throughout the United States. This ban has protected millions of Americans during the nationwide shutdown. Unfortunately, the CARES Act, along with the eviction moratorium, is set to expire on July 24th, 2020.

The United States may soon be looking at an unprecedented wave of evictions when the moratorium expires. Some experts are predicting that around 20 million renters are at risk of losing their homes. Evictions bar the tenant from federally subsidized housing and put a permanent mark on that person’s credit score. For some, this could make it nearly impossible to find other accommodation. A mass wave of evictions could very quickly turn in to a homelessness crisis throughout America.

We must extend the eviction moratorium through the remainder of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is the only way to ensure that the most vulnerable citizens have access to a safe and warm environment during this national emergency. Please sign this petition asking Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to extend the moratorium on evictions until the end of 2020.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senate Majority Leader McConnell,

Millions of Americans are facing the imminent threat of homelessness due to the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic. The federal eviction moratorium is set to expire along with the CARES Act on July 24th, 2020. Along with losing their housing, evicted tenants are also banned from federally subsidized housing, and they are left with a permanent mark on their credit score.

There are an estimated 20 million Americans at risk of eviction in the coming months. The United States cannot afford to face a homelessness crisis on top of the current crisis that is the COVID-19 pandemic. Without adequate housing, people face an increased risk of illness and are left with an inability to quarantine. Please use your position of power to extend the federal eviction moratorium through the end of the year.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
