Say No to Plastic Bags and Straws in New York City

Target: Commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Dr. Oxiris Barbot

Goal: Enforce the ban on plastic straws and plastic bags in New York City.

Plastic straws and plastic bags are banned in New York City. However, these single-use items are still handed out at many stores and food service establishments.

Plastic waste and pollution and the culture of disposable convenience continue to have a hugely negative impact on the environment, creating unnecessary waste and causing harm and death to wildlife.

We must work toward a world free from disposable plastics. Getting rid of unnecessary single-use bags and straws is an important step in that direction.

Banning plastic straws and plastic bags has been ineffectual in New York City, so we must demand that those in power punish businesses who dispense these harmful and unnecessary items. The hope is to start a precedent where businesses understand that they must adopt environmentally supportive practices or face a fine.

This petition demands that during routine health inspections at food service establishments, plastic bags and straws are added to the list of unhealthful practices that are investigated by health inspectors. If the inspector should find that the establishment has these single-use products, they will be fined, in addition to any other fines they would receive from other potential unhealthful practices.

By signing this petition, you are urging the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to take a big step towards ridding the city of plastic waste and pollution and to set a precedent for other cities to follow to make our country a cleaner and less wasteful place to live and flourish.

Dear Commissioner Barbot,

The public has been informed that plastic bags and plastic straws are banned in New York City, however they are still widely available at many shops, including many food service establishments.

In addition to the wonderful work you have done to promote health equity for the families and especially young children in NYC, this petition presents a powerful opportunity for you to set a standard to lessen the impact of plastic waste and pollution in our city.

We the undersigned request that you add two new requirements to health inspections for food service establishments. These would be a fine for establishments that provide plastic straws and a fine for establishments that provide plastic bags.

We believe this would be an exciting first step to set a precedent for NYC to decrease plastic waste and pollution overall and to encourage other cities to do the same.
