Don’t Threaten Health and Safety of Public School Students During Pandemic

Target: Betsy DeVos, Secretary of Education, United States

Goal: Offer funding and support to public schools in the effort to prevent unnecessary spread of disease.

US Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos has repeatedly called for schools to reopen even as coronavirus infection rates have soared, even threatening to withhold federal education funds from schools that refuse. Instead, DeVos has attempted to divert funds to individual families and private schools in an effort to weaken the public schools she’s so long attacked.

The unsafety of reopening in-person classes is part of a larger failure in many states to provide adequate protection to citizens. DeVos’ efforts will make wealthy private schools the only ones capable of even basic health protection, already inadequate to fight the spread of disease, while public schools will become a new ground zero for illness, injury, and death.

Public school students have the same rights to life and safety as those in wealthier schools. Sign the petition below to demand that DeVos respect these rights and provide support to schools so that students can stay safe and healthy.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary DeVos,

Your attempt to force schools to open despite dire warnings from public health officials is alarmingly irresponsible. As the person most responsible for safe and efficient education throughout the country, you cannot endanger the health of children and families by forcing schools to reopen before it’s safe.

Now is not the time to pursue the privatization of schools by diverting federal funding from public institutions. Stop threatening schools and start listening to expert medical and educational advice.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
