Close All Nonessential Businesses to Combat Rise in Coronavirus

Target: Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas

Goal: Close all non-essential businesses in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

The state of Texas is seeing a massive rise in coronavirus numbers with over 50,000 active infections, but the state continues to allow nonessential businesses to remain open. On May 1, Texas was one of the first states to ease restrictions put into place to combat coronavirus and begin reopening its economy. Now, a month later, at least one hospital in Houston is reporting that they have run out of ICU beds.

Governor Greg Abbott is halting reopening procedures, but does not want to impose additional restrictions and precautionary measures. He has also announced that hospitals in four of the state’s largest counties will stop nonessential surgeries and prioritize COVID-19 patients.

States that eased restrictions earlier than others were doing so in response to heavy pressure to help restore the economy.

Governor Abbott has said that he doesn’t want the state to “go backwards and close down businesses,” but gyms, restaurants, and malls remain open while the state is suffering from a wave of coronavirus cases. Sign this petition to urge Governor Abbott to close all nonessential businesses in Texas.

Dear Governor Abbott,

As the United States defends against the coronavirus outbreak, we must band together and all take the necessary precautions. Texas has been crippled by an influx of COVID-19 cases, with at least one hospital announcing that they have run out of ICU beds. While this is happening, restaurants, gyms, malls, and salons continue to remain open because you don’t want to “go backwards” on your reopening plan.

I urge you to close all nonessential businesses in Texas. The health of US citizens is the most important thing as we face this global pandemic.
