Ensure Access to Clean Water for Communities of Color

Target: Tim Petty, United States Assistant Secretary for Water and Science

Goal: Guarantee access to clean water and sanitation for minorities and lower-income communities.

Millions of people in minority and lower-income communities, including Native American reservations, are struggling to survive the COVID-19 pandemic without access to clean water. Access to clean water and sanitation are recognized as a human right by the United Nations, yet the United States ranks 23rd globally for this access. 77 million Americans are served by water systems with one or more violations of the Safe Drinking Water Act, threatening their health and violating their basic rights to a safe and healthy standard of living as guaranteed by federal law.

However, federal, state, and local governments have all refused to recognize this right, abandoning those most in need of help. In the wealthiest nation on Earth, it’s a criminal shame that leaders refuse to satisfy the most basic needs of the most vulnerable groups. Sign the petition below to demand that the White House work with Congress to protect and improve clean drinking water for all.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Assistant Secretary Petty,

Despite the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act and the opinion of the United Nations, tens of millions of Americans do not have access to safe, clean water for drinking and sanitation, violating their human right to a good standard of living and health. People of color, Native American reservation residents, and members of low-income communities are disproportionately impacted by these, leaving the most vulnerable members of the population subject to illness and poor health.

I demand that you enforce the provisions of the Safe Water Drinking Act and work with Congress to provide funding to ensure all Americans have reliable access to clean water.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
