Protect Migrant Farmworkers From Massive Coronavirus Surge

Target: Ron DeSantis, Governor of Florida

Goal: Provide migrant farmworkers with more resources to protect against the rampant coronavirus.

Migrant farmworker communities in Florida have become hotspots for Covid-19. Specifically, the agricultural town of Immokalee has 1,207 confirmed cases so far, which is more than Miami Beach, a city three times larger.

Migrant farmworkers are at high risk of contracting the virus because they work close together in fields, ride buses shoulder-to-shoulder and live in cramped conditions, often with several other family members and workers. In general, Latino populations are experiencing disproportionately high infection rates due to the fact that they largely make up the essential work force.

Governor Ron DeSantis attributed Florida’s steep rise in cases to “overwhelmingly Hispanic farmworkers.” Civil rights leaders demanded an apology for his shallow statement and critics claimed his administration is scapegoating immigrant workers after routinely ignoring pleas for better working conditions. Sign below to demand Governor DeSantis provide more resources for migrant farmworkers to protect against the coronavirus.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. DeSantis,

Florida’s valuable migrant farmworkers are suffering from coronavirus at disproportionately high rates. The United States relies heavily on these workers, yet they are impoverished, forced to live in squalor conditions, and are given very few resources to protect themselves against Covid-19.

They must make the very difficult decision to continue working and risk the high likelihood of getting sick, or stay home and risk losing their house and job. I demand that you provide better protections for migrant farmworkers against the coronavirus, such as improved living conditions and more testing.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
