Target: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker of the House John Boehner
Goal: Limit the length of campaigns and streamline the governing process for elections in the U.S.
The current status quo in American presidential politics is two years of endless campaigning, straw polls, and millions of dollars spent on negative attack ads. All of this comes for around one year of possible productivity before Congress shuts down because legislators, too, have an election coming up. In addition to the hundreds of hours and millions of dollars wasted, there are nearly 13,000 separate entities with some responsibility for electoral administration. Congress must realize how absurdly long our political process carries on and streamline the electoral governing process to allow for reasonable, and needed, change.
For example, British elections cannot, by law, last more than 17 working days. Italian elections last around 7 weeks, Dutch elections around 10. There is no reason, or hope, for this short of an electoral season here in America, but there is no reason for our elections to take 40 times as long as the U.K.’s, either.
Streamlining the electoral governing process would, for starters, allow for regulation of the length of political campaigns. It would also help stop unnecessary hang-ups like the multiple hour-long lines citizens wishing to exercise their inalienable right to vote had to put up with in Florida, Arizona, and other states.
By signing the petition below, you are urging Congress to consolidate the governing process for elections with the goal of streamlining the process. Doing so will save millions of dollars and hours that are much better spent working on actually solving the problems this nation faces.
Dear Harry Reid, Senate Majority Leader, and John Boehner, Speaker of the House,
The American electoral status quo is simply unacceptable. Presidential hopefuls take two full years campaigning, with endless straw polls and millions spent on campaign ads – many of them terribly negative. Once in office, the newly elected President has only a year before the lame-duck Congress stagnates any progress with eyes on an election of their own. In addition, there are around 13,000 entities involved in electoral administration. Not only is this a gross waste of resources and time, but inefficient governing has led to multiple hours of waiting on election day for citizens wishing to exercise their Constitutionally guaranteed right to vote.
British elections, by law, cannot last more than 17 work days. There is absolutely no reason for our election season to last 40 times as long as the U.K.’s. I am urging you to consolidate the governing bodies for our electoral process with the goal of shortening our election season and grating more oversight into electoral administration.
