Trump: Don’t Allow Companies to Hide Leaks of Cancer-Causing Chemicals

Target: Andrew R. Wheeler, Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Goal: Don’t allow companies to bypass reporting of harmful chemical releases.

A rule is being crafted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that would allow companies to bypass reporting the release of harmful perfluorinated chemicals (PFAS) into the air, land and waterways. PFAS, or “forever chemicals,” can be found in many products such as non-stick pans and weatherproof clothing. They are linked to cancer, low infant birth weight, immune issues and thyroid disruptions.

Last year, congress pressured manufacturers to report to the government if they release 100 pounds or more of PFAS into a waterway. However, the EPA’s new regulation would allow companies to bypass this requirement, so long as PFAS in a mixture released did not exceed one percent of the total mixture. According to Eve Gartner, a managing attorney at Earthjustice, one teaspoon of PFAS in an Olympic-size swimming pool can have negative health effects.

This new regulation will allow companies to continue to overburden the environment and human health with toxic chemicals. Sign below to demand the EPA require companies to report whenever any amount of PFAS is released and create stricter regulations on the amount allowed to be released.

Dear Mr. Wheeler,

Your new regulation will exempt companies from reporting the release of toxic perfluorinated chemicals (PFAS) into our air, land and waterways. As you know, PFAS are linked with cancer, birth defects, immune deficiencies and other severe health effects.

Especially during a global pandemic, you should be tightening regulations of chemicals that harm human health, not loosening them. I demand that you require companies to report any release of PFAS and create stricter regulations on the amount allowed to be released.

PROTECT PEOPLE AND THE ENVIRONMENT, not corporations, President Trump. Shortsightedness and greed is KILLING US ALL.

  2. Jose Espino says:

Im not signing this petition because again the name of President Trump is improperly used. The target is Andrew R. Wheeler, then why mention Trump? Also, if you were to remove all of today’s harmful chemicals from consumers use, we would be back to the stone age. We should focus on the main problems which are ecosystem damage by fossil fuel and a way to get rid of the COVID-19.

  3. Lyndley Hillebrand says:

Im not against going back to the stone age, it would do our society good to learn how to provide for themselves. Look at the E.U and how they are using the precautionary principle to avoid drastic pollution and irreversible damage to wildlife, soil, and human health.
