Do Not Ban Legal Immigrants Who Perform Essential Jobs During Pandemic

Target: Donald Trump, President of the United States

Goal: Do not limit the legal immigration of workers to the United States.

President Trump has enacted policies that will limit legal immigration into the United States for immigrants with work visas through the end of the calendar year. Trump’s platform has always been very focused on curtailing illegal immigration, but since he took office in 2016, the president has also focused on limiting legal immigration.

Trump has said that this move to limit work visas for the 2020 year is in response to the coronavirus pandemic, which has resulted in record-high unemployment rates in the United States. He has rationalized the move to limit legal immigration by saying that US citizens should be prioritized as workers as the US economy reopens and begins to recover from the quarantine closures.

Those critical of the move to limit work visas have noted that Trump hasn’t considered all of the benefits and contributions that immigrants have on the US economy. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine presented a report in 2017 that found that immigration “has an overall positive impact on the long-run economic growth in the US” and that immigrants ultimately contribute more in tax revenue than they take in government benefits. Additionally, immigrants largely take jobs that boost very specific sectors of the economy, usually in areas where Americans tend not to take jobs, like child care and farm work.

Ultimately, banning legal immigrants coming to the US on work visas could harm the long-term recovery of the economy. Sign this petition to urge President Trump to redact his policies on limiting legal immigration.

Dear President Trump,

Immigrants make up part of the backbone of US economy. During the coronavirus pandemic, Americans have come to redefine what constitutes essential workers. We’ve seen that farm hands are as essential as doctors and that caregivers as as essential as scientists. By banning legal immigration via work visas for the calendar year, the US economy is at risk of remaining weak in the areas where immigrants greatly contribute.

I urge you to allow immigrants to travel to the US legally on work visas and contribute to the US economy.

We are ALL immigrants in the U.S., except for Native Americans.

No. You got it all wrong President Trump is banning illegal immigration. Immigrants that come through the legal system are welcome to the US. Legal immigration laws do not include jumping over the Mexican/US border wall.
