Trump: Don’t Imprison Protesters for Removing Confederate Statues

Target: Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America

Goal: Don’t threaten protesters who are removing statues of slave owners with imprisonment.

President Trump has threatened anyone who has defaced or removed statues of racist figures with up to ten years in prison. This comes after Black Lives Matter protesters attempted to topple a statue of Andrew Jackson, the seventh American president who was a slave owner and displaced Native Americans in order to use their land for plantations.

As part of the nationwide outcry against structural racism, protesters have removed several statues of figures linked to confederacy, colonialism and slavery, including monuments of Robert E. Lee and George Washington. In response, the president tweeted, “I have authorized the Federal Government to arrest anyone who vandalizes or destroys any monument, statue or other such Federal property in the U.S. with up to ten years in prison.” He then referred to protesters as “vandals,” “hoodlums” and “anarchists” who don’t love America.

The removal of figures associated with confederacy, slavery and colonialism is an important symbol of solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. Sign below to demand President Trump stop threatening protesters with imprisonment for removing racists statues.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Trump,

This country cannot continue to honor historical figures who were associated with slavery and genocide. The protesters who are responsible for defacing or removing statues of confederates and slave owners are fighting for equality and working to create a country that is comfortable for all citizens, not just white people.

We will not continue to bow to men who brutalized entire populations of people for a profit. I demand that you stop threatening protesters who have defaced or removed racist statues with imprisonment.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
