United Nations: Investigate Police Killings of Black People in the United States

Target: António Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations

Goal: Open an investigation into racism, police brutality and police killings of unarmed black people in the United States.

Philonese Floyd, the brother of George Floyd, appealed to the United Nations (U.N.) to open an investigation into racism, police brutality and police killings of unarmed black people in the United States. This comes after the tragic death of his brother, George, along with countless other unwarranted killings, violence against protesters and police assault on journalists covering the protests.

Following demands for international action by human rights groups, The U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva called a rare “urgent debate” to discuss their response to systematic racism and policing in America. At the opening of this debate, Floyd sent an emotional message calling upon the U.N. to open a commission of inquiry investigation. A commission of inquiry is a fact-finding mission used to respond to serious violations of international human rights law.

In his message, Floyd spoke, “The way you saw my brother tortured and murdered on camera is the way black people are treated by police in America.” Sign below to demand the U.N. open a commission of inquiry investigation into racism, police brutality and police killings of unarmed black people in America.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Guterres,

In solidarity with Philonese Floyd, human rights groups and thousands of protesters nationwide are calling out to the U.N to adequately respond to severe human rights violations against black people in the United States.

This rampant oppression and death of unarmed black people, along with violence against protesters and assault of journalists, cannot continue. I demand that you open an investigation into racism, police brutality and police killings in America.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
