Don’t Let Alleged Killer and Torturer Lead Peace Talks

Target: Mike Pompeo, US. Secretary of State

Goal: End association with politican accused of murder, torture, and assault.

A man accused of murder and of orchestrating the physical and sexual assault of a rival is set to help lead peace talks between the United States, Afghanistan, and the Taliban. Aside from the peace talks, alleged “known killer” Abdul Rashid Dostum will serve as marshal for Afghanistan’s armed forces and play a prominent role in selecting top government officials. The deal, offered by the current Afghan president, comes in the wake of continued pressure from the United States to resolve a dispute about the country’s last presidential election. This election ended with both candidates declaring victory. So, thanks in large part to American interference, a man charged with numerous human rights violations over decades will ironically shepherd a quest for peace.

The latest alleged offense occurred when a frequent political critic of Dostum claimed the man’s bodyguards abducted, savagely beat, and then raped him with a rifle. Following the accusation, Dostum went into exile in another country but returned to leverage the political power he supposedly wields over a voting bloc within the country. Because of this influence, Dostum has allegedly been allowed to get away with atrocities for far too long. Now, the U.S. is giving its implicit stamp of approval to reportedly pervasive human rights violations.

Sign this petition to demand U.S. leaders reaffirm America’s long-term role as a global defender of human rights.

Dear Secretary Pompeo,

You recently withdrew billions of dollars in aid from Afghanistan…not for the country’s atrocious record on human rights but because of political PR. Now, Afghanistan has answered your campaign of pressure by installing an accused opponent of human rights into a prominent military, political, and peacekeeping role. Abdul Rashid Dostum will never provide a roadmap to any peaceful resolution.

This man’s “record” speaks for itself. He is charged with ordering the torture, assault, and occasional murder of any person who gets in his way. Dostum’s last alleged offense—involving the kidnapping and rape of a political rival—sent him into exile. Such horrendous reported actions should not be rewarded with more power and opportunity to use and abuse that power against countless citizens.

Defend human rights instead of enabling their erosion and slow, painful death. Do not restore funding and engage in peace talks with someone accused of disregarding every principle of human decency.
