End Racist and Abusive Identity Checks of Innocent Civilians

Target: Emmanuel Macron, President of France

Goal: End race-driven identity checks of civilians by security forces.

Security forces in France are engaging in discriminatory, racist, and abusive random identity checks of innocent civilians. This violation of basic human rights must come to an end.

As protests against police brutality sweep France, criticism has been directed toward the racist actions of security forces. One of these actions is random ID checks of civilians. These stop-and-search practices are most likely to target black and Arab individuals, especially males. In some cases, the checks have been conducted on minority children. Reasonable suspicion is not required by law.

We have seen stop-and-search as blatantly racist in America. As a result, the practice was banned in many major American cities. France should follow suit and end this abusive practice that perpetuates racism in the nation’s police force.

Dear President Macron,

Stop-and-search has disproportionately targeted black and Arab boys and men, perpetuating racism in your nation’s police force. These random ID checks without any required suspicion are an abuse of basic human rights and lead to brutality, unjust arrests, and social stigma.

Stop-and-search has been banned in many American cities. I ask that France do the same. End this racist, discriminatory, and abusive practice.
