Target: Governor Pat Quinn
Goal: Congratulate Governor Pat Quinn on supporting immigrants’ rights by signing a new law that allows undocumented immigrants to obtain drivers’ licenses.
Receiving United States citizenship is an arduous and lengthy process faced by immigrants, who merely wish to improve their and their families’ quality of life. For documented or undocumented immigrants, adapting to American life is made more difficult by restricted access to jobs, health care, licenses, and other resources. Recently, Illinois joined Washington, New Mexico, and Utah in easing this transition by allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain drivers’ licenses. Thank Governor Pat Quinn for signing this law and advocating on behalf of immigrants.
Safe and reliable transportation is essential to life in America. In many areas, this is not possible without a car. Allowing undocumented immigrants to receive a driver’s license gives them access to grocery stores, jobs, schools, and other vital resources. Furthermore, this law will increase driving safety. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reported that over 21,000 deaths were caused by automobile accidents involving unlicensed or invalidly licensed drivers from 2007-2009. The passing of this law will increase the number of drivers educated about state driving laws and road safety.
Currently there are severe punishments for driving without a license, but there are still many unlicensed drivers. A portion of this population of drivers cannot obtain licenses because they are undocumented immigrants. Because driving is so essential to living in much of America, these immigrants are forced to drive illegally. Illinois is one of the first states to address this issue by permitting undocumented immigrants to obtain a driver’s license. The passing of this law has greatly contributed to the rights of immigrants and will improve the safety of drivers. Congratulate Governor Quinn for acknowledging immigrants’ rights and safety.
Dear Governor Pat Quinn,
Driving is the only viable method of transportation in much of America. Many people indulge in driving whether or not they are licensed. Strict driving regulations have been unable to discourage unlicensed drivers. Many people drive illegally because they cannot obtain a license due to their status as an immigrant. Rather than ignoring this problem, you have chosen to acknowledge undocumented immigrants as part of our society.
We wish to thank you for this. In permitting undocumented immigrants to obtain a driver’s license, you have improved everyone’s quality of life by providing immigrants with more rights and everyone with safer roads. We are grateful for your dedication and commitment to change. Congratulations on making Illinois a model for the nation, progressing immigration laws, and providing drivers with safer roads.
