Terminate Olympia Police Officer for Posing With White Supremacists

Target: Olympia Police Department Interim Police Chief Aaron Jelcick

Goal: Fire Olympia police officer for inflaming racial tensions during a peaceful protest by posing with armed white supremacists.

The city of Olympia, like most of the United States, has been in a heightened state of tension since the death of George Floyd on May 25th, 2020. Since his murder, Olympia has been home to daily protests demanding justice for Floyd and calling for an end to police brutality. On Friday, June 5th, a photo began circulating of one of Olympia’s local police officers posing with armed white supremacists and displaying the hand signal for The Three Percenters movement. The photo has sparked community outrage since it surfaced, and although the Olympia Police Department has opened an investigation into the photo, no actions have been taken to remove the officers at fault.

The group in question, known as The Three Percenters, are a far-right militia movement that came into the public spotlight when a number of them acted as security for the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017. A year later, three other men associated with the Three Percenters were arrested in connection with the bombing of a mosque in Minnesota. Association with such a blatantly violent group while working in a position of power is deeply harmful and absolutely unacceptable.

The armed individuals who identify with the Three Percent Movement began showing up at the protests in Olympia, harassing black community members, and adding to the heightened tension in the city shortly after the Black Lives Matter protests began. Posing with such a polarizing organization while in uniform shows a deep lack of compassion and a blatant disregard for the safety and mental health of the community. Allowing this officer to continue to work with the public in an empowered capacity will erode community trust and perpetuate the same systematic injustices that led to the protests that we are seeing around our country now.

Please sign the petition below to urge Interim Police Chief Aaron Jelcick to take a stand on racial justice by firing the offending officer.

Dear Interim Police Chief Jelcick,

In the past several weeks, America has been besieged with graphic footage of widespread police brutality. These images, videos, and personal anecdotes have left Americans questioning the place of police within our society. On the night of June 5th, one of your police officers was photographed posing with a group of armed white supremacists who had reportedly been threatening protesters earlier that night. This is an unacceptable violation of the community’s trust. African Americans are disproportionately affected by police violence and allowing one of your officers to pose with known, violent, white supremacist groups is grossly insulting to the community that places its trust in your department.

I am calling on the Olympia Police Department to take a stand on racial justice by firing the officer in the photograph. Show your constituents that you will not tolerate racist ideologies within the organization charged with the safety of our community. It is only by taking a stand that we can enact real change within our society.

But let me guess, it’d be okay to pose with the looters right?

Since I have no proof that this actually happened, I will not sign your petition.
