Don’t Allow Healthcare Discrimination Against Transgender People

Target: Alex Azar, United States Secretary of Health and Human Services

Goal: Restore Affordable Care Act rule that protects transgender people from discrimination.

Vital healthcare protections have been stripped away from millions of transgender Americans. The White House has eliminated Section 1557, a key rule of the Affordable Care Act designed to protect transgender people from discrimination in healthcare, leaving them vulnerable to bigotry and denying them treatments essential to their health. The rule illegalized discrimination on the basis of “race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability” from healthcare providers. “Sex,” in this case, was defined as “male, female, neither, or a combination of male and female,” in a historic recognition of the rights and existence of transgender Americans.

Section 1557 was attacked soon after Donald Trump took office, and plans have long been in place to undo it. In effect, this reversal achieves nothing beneficial for the federal government or healthcare providers. It is instead a hateful and deliberate effort to make it unreasonably difficult for transgender individuals to protect themselves legally and secure medical treatments that has to do with their sex, even if they’re life-saving. This cruel decision is a cowardly attack on the rights of a vulnerable group, and it cannot be allowed to stand unanswered. Sign the petition below to demand that this crucial protection be restored for the sake of as many as 1.4 million Americans.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Secretary,

The decision to overturn Section 1557, which guarantees legal protection in healthcare matters to transgender people, is an act of blatant hatred which achieves nothing for healthcare providers and actively harms transgender individuals. This group of misunderstood Americans already faces widespread misunderstanding and discrimination, and it is the most shameful and cowardly act of bullying to strip them of this vital defense.

I demand that you behave with decency and kindness and instruct your department to restore Section 1557 immediately.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
