Protect Vulnerable People From Toxic Diesel Fumes

Target: Mary D. Nichols, Chairwoman, California Air Resources Board

Goal: Don’t relax regulations that protect thousands of lives from toxic diesel fumes.

Diesel, oil, and freight companies in California are using coronavirus as an excuse to attack regulations which reduce emissions, cutting smog and saving lives. Prior to the outbreak of the pandemic, these industries were already subject to increasing efforts to curb the amount of particulate matter and toxic fumes they released into areas health experts call “diesel death zones.” These are areas close to ports and trucking centers where the constant starting and running of diesel engines exposes thousands of Californians to more than 40 toxic substances, increasing the risk of asthma, allergies, cancers, and cardiopulmonary diseases.

The companies producing these emissions are now claiming that they will be unable to cope with their environmental obligations due to the pandemic. They have claimed that human health and safety must come second after their profit margins, made all the worse by research indicating that the kind of pollution they produce is a direct contributor to faster coronavirus transmission rates.

These companies cannot be allowed to place the lives of human beings at risk for their own sake. Sign the petition below to demand California stand its ground and protect its citizens.

Dear Ms. Nichols,

For decades, diesel fumes have coated California’s skies with toxic fumes and irritating particulate matter, disproportionately harming the most vulnerable Californians. Now, oil- and diesel-dependent companies are trying to use coronavirus as a smokescreen to evade their obligations to reduce emissions and lower the risk they pose to their neighbors.

I urge you to uphold Californian regulations enacted to protect the lives and health of all. Business comes second to the safety and comfort of human beings.
