Stop Providing Local Police Departments With Military Weaponry

Target: Donald Trump, President of the United States

Goal: Cut off police access to military-style gear.

The Pentagon sponsors a program that transfers military weaponry to local law enforcement departments. Police currently have access to military-style vehicles, weapons, and gear. Over the past week, the nation has seen police in military-style gear confront protesters across the nation, who have been calling for justice for George Floyd, who was killed by police, and an end to police brutality that disproportionately affects black Americans. Republicans and Democrats in Congress have begun a bipartisan push to shut down this program that funnels military-style equipment to law enforcement departments.

The initiative was pushed back by President Barack Obama but was revived by President Trump, allowing police departments to be augmented with equipment such as bayonets and grenade launchers. As police departments’ jurisdiction is American soil, it can only be assumed that these weapons are planned to be used on American citizens and residents.

President Trump has called the American citizens exercising their right to protest “terrorists” and has complained to governors that the police were not handling protesters aggressively enough, saying: “Mayors and governors must establish an overwhelming presence until the violence is quelled. If a city or a state refuses to take the actions necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then I will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them.”

Sign this petition to urge President Trump to stop the flow of military equipment to police departments across the nation.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Trump,

The objects that militaries use in wartime should not be passed into the hands of local police departments, who are meant to protect and serve American citizens. There should be no need for grenade launchers and military-style vehicles in local policing. Especially now, as police brutality is highlighted and fought against, we need the police to be seen as community members willing to collaborate with the people that they have taken an oath to protect, not as antagonizers.

I urge you to stop the Pentagon program that funnels military-style equipment to police departments.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
